Free SRTM X-band data!
The SRTM X-band digital elevation models (DEMs) are now available at no cost! You have to be an EOWEB® registered user and login with your user name and password in order to access the data. In addition to placing a regular product order in EOWEB NG for up to one hundred tiles of SRTM X-band DEM or image data, the SRTM X-band DEM data can be downloaded in bulk from the SRTM FTP-Server. The DEMs are provided in packages of 10° by 10°. Upon login, follow the link 'Download SRTM Data' at the top of the EOWEB NG homepage to access the SRTM DEM data via FTP.
Alternatively, the SRTM data can be accessed via a Web Mapping Service (WMS) at: http://geoservice.dlr.de/elevation/wms The SRTM X-band data were acquired on the Space Shuttle Endeavor in February 2000, along with the SRTM C-Band data available through NASA. They cover the entire globe between 60° north and south. However, other than the SRTM C-band data, coverage of the X-band DEMs is not continuous. The gaps between the individual image strips are a result of the narrow swath width of the SRTM X-band radar system. Information on the coverage of the SRTM X-band data can be obtained by visiting the SRTM coverage page or - in more detail - via performing a product search for SRTM in EOWEB-NG.
The SRTM project page provides additional information on the SRTM mission. A description of the SRTM X-band DEM data format is available here.
The SRTM DEM data can be downloaded at no cost. The use of the SRTM data is governed by the SRTM data policy available here. The data are provided as is, no warranty of any kind is given.
